Transformative Partnerships Advancing Climate Resilience and Promoting Sustainable Growth in Papua New Guinea
October 17, 2024
The Green Finance Centre (GFC) and the Climate FIRST team from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) have come together to engage in a transformative dialogue aimed at driving climate resilience and fostering sustainable development across Papua New Guinea (PNG). The discussions, held recently, marked a pivotal milestone in their collective mission to address the nation’s most pressing climate challenges and to create opportunities for inclusive growth and prosperity.
At the core of this collaboration is the groundbreaking Climate FIRST project, a multi-faceted initiative that has been fully funded by the Australian Government, with a contribution of AUD 20 million through the PNG-Australia Climate Change Action Plan (PACCAP). The project unites key partners, including the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Papua New Guinea’s Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA), and GGGI, demonstrating the strength of international cooperation in the face of climate change.
The Climate FIRST project is designed to accelerate PNG’s transition from climate adaptation planning to actionable results. By focusing on scaling up climate finance and green investments, particularly in the provinces of Eastern Highlands, Enga, Manus, Milne Bay, Morobe, New Ireland, and Simbu, the initiative aims to build sustainable, climate-resilient communities across the nation. This includes a strong emphasis on unlocking both domestic and international funding while streamlining climate finance coordination to achieve tangible outcomes.
One of the defining aspects of the Climate FIRST project is its commitment to gender equity, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI). The initiative ensures that women, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups are not only beneficiaries but active participants in shaping the sustainable future of PNG. By aligning with inclusive green finance principles, Climate FIRST aims to promote equitable development, ensuring no one is left behind as the country moves toward a greener, more resilient future.
The partnership between the Green Finance Centre and Climate FIRST signals a shared vision of climate action and sustainable development. Together, they are working to strengthen the mobilization of climate finance and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in contributing to climate-resilient communities. Their collaborative efforts are vital in advancing green finance solutions that meet the unique needs of Papua New Guinea, building a foundation for long-term environmental sustainability and economic growth.
“These discussions underscore the power of collaboration in driving real change,” said the Head of GFC Mr. Mohinesh Prasad. “By combining our expertise and resources, we can accelerate progress on climate resilience and inclusive growth in PNG, ensuring that both people and the planet thrive.”
The Green Finance Centre and Climate FIRST remain committed to their shared goal of advancing climate resilience, promoting sustainable growth, and ensuring that the benefits of climate action are felt by all Papua New Guineans, especially those in vulnerable and underserved communities.
